On customization

Good defaults first, then the freedom to change them. Where customization fits in Vela.

In the first article, I said I don’t like to customize my desktop.

This is not in fact 100% correct. I have strong opinions about how I want my desktop, but I also understand that I have strong opinions.

Let me explain: my aim is not only to satisfy myself; it’s to build something for most people. This means that even if this desktop environment will of course follow my taste, and customization will not be a priority, especially in the first weeks and months of development, customization will be part of this desktop.

Already there

Some of it you can already change today:

  • Light and dark modes, which KDE and GTK apps follow too.
  • Wallpaper and colors, in Settings → Personalization.
  • The taskbar, centered or aligned to the left.

More will come.

What’s coming

Because Vela is way more than a customized shell. And I’d never want anyone to give up on Vela just because they don’t like my theme. So there definitely will be something like KDE themes.
